Life lessons from the animals we live with

Dogs and cats live in the present, set clear boundaries and find joy in simple moments. Sometimes our animals quietly remind us how balance and calm can look.
Small everyday lessons with a big impact
Our dogs often greet us at home with the enthusiasm of someone welcoming us back from a long journey. Perhaps this is because they take every moment seriously. For them, it is never taken for granted that we leave the “pack” and return safely.
Carpe diem — seize the day — could easily have been coined by a dog.
They live in the present. Without to-do lists. Without endless mental loops. Without the constant urge to accomplish everything at once. Perhaps, in our often hectic lives, we could borrow a small piece of that calm.
And then there are our cats.
Cats are masters of observation. They wait. They watch. They decide for themselves when the moment is right to play, to hunt or to cuddle. And if they do not feel like closeness, they communicate this very clearly — and without guilt.
- Staying true to oneself.
- Setting boundaries.
- Not always trying to please everyone.
These too are lessons we can learn from our animals — with a smile, and perhaps a little admiration.
Sometimes it is our pets who show us what a healthy balance can look like:
joy in the moment, presence in the here and now, and the freedom to take one’s own needs seriously.
Perhaps that is not such a bad philosophy for life.
